Mount Pleasant Area Historical Society
|
| As a result of a town meeting in 1995,
at which residents expressed an interest in preserving the heritage and cultural
resources of our arear, the Mount Pleasant Area Historical Society was formed.
The society's purpose is to provide a public forum for the review and discussion
of historical issues, to promote the history and culture of Mount Pleasant
and the surrounding region, to preserve and collect local artifacts, and to
further develop the resources of the area. The Historical Society is open to all interested persons, families, and businesses. Our membership numbers about forty members. Regular meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at our office. Originally, meetings were held in the Mount Pleasant Free Public Library. In 2002 we opened an office in the In-Town Shops on Main Street, giving us greater community visibility and creating space to collect and display artifacts. We have sponsored a variety of projects since 1995, including the Ghost Walk/Lantern Tour, the reprinting of the Mount Pleasant history book "A Town that Grew at the Crossroad", the printing of the "Morewood Mine Massacre", an exhibition of oral histories and photographs in 1997, manning exhibits at the Glass and Ethnic Festival, conducting the Christmas Tea and House Tour in 2002, and was instrumental in the formation of the 175th Anniversary celebration of Mount Pleasant throughout 2003. 2002 Officers: President - Richard Snyder Vice-President - James Lozier Sec.-Tres. - Barbara Androstic |
