"Westmoreland College" was founded in 1849 by the United Brethren in Christ Church. A deed dated August 17, 1849 conveyed 2 acres of ground, in East Huntingdon Township, from Joseph and Eliza Lippincott to John Wallace, David Keister, D.S. Cherry, Joseph Gross, w.s. Johnson, John Clair, Samuel Zuck, Benjamin Clair, Solomon Keister, and Christian Ebersole, Trustees, duly appointed by the United Brethren in Christ Church, for the management and control of the Mount Pleasant College and the Mount Pleasant Union College.
In 1850 the school was open for students. The Mount Pleasant Union College was incorporated in 1858 with the following officers:
  • Edward Braden, President of the Board.
  • George W. Newmyer, Secretary.
  • Thomas Hurst, Treasurer.
  • Rev. James H. Fife, A.M., Principal.
In 1858 the faculty were:
  • Rev. James H. Fife, A.M., President and Professor of Latin and Greek
  • William A. Sterrett, A.B., Professor of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • Miss Minerva M. Metzgar, Principal of Female Department

At some point, after 1858 the school was known as Mount Pleasant Academy and Normal School. By 1863 the school was known as "Westmoreland College." Westmoreland College had 117 students in1863 and 87 in 1864. The 1863 graduating class was composed of the following members:
  • Mary Hugus
  • A.M. Lippincott
  • Lizzie Miller
  • Louise Voight
Some of the students in 1864 were: John A. Warden, J.J. Overholt, H.W. Overholt, Dick Stahl, Jacob Justice, W.H. Lobingier, H.C. Frick, J.A. Boltz, J.R. Speigel, W.M. Smith, Mary Warden, Emma Smitley, Lizzie Warden, Anna M. Smith, Maranda Dick, Maria Frick, J.W. Stoner, B.F. Overholt, R.E. Fulton, Christian F. Overholt, and F. Hurst.
