National Guard Armory in Mt. Pleasant, PA

This is the National Guard Armory Building in Mt. Pleasant. I think it's the oldest Armory Building in Pennsylvania. If I'm wrong, let me know!

I received the following from Liz Zemba of the Daily Courier:

According to John Maietta, press secretary for the Department of Military Affairs at Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pa., the Mount Pleasant Armory was built in 1906 to house 60 soldiers. He said most other armories in the state date to the 1920s.

The military abandoned the armory in 1995 because of its deteriorating condition. It had formerly housed Detachment A, 110th Infantry. Troops who had previously trained there now do so in the nearby communities of Connellsville and Scottdale.

The armory was put up for sale in 1997. Officials with the Department of General Services in Harrisburg said a sale was pending as of December 1997 to a local businessman who reportedly bid $40,101 for the building.

The fate of the structure remains unknown as of January 1998. A new, $3.3 million armory is under construction in Mt. Pleasant Township, located just outside Mount Pleasant Borough on School Street. The new armory will accommodate 200 guardsmen and will include an assembly area, offices, training rooms and kitchen.

Construction is expected to be completed sometime in late December 1998 or early spring 1999.
